Fairycore Outfit Ideas: 13+ Including Dark and Masculine Looks

We don’t want to live in this world anymore. We want to live in fairyland where celebrating our dreaminess is a required activity, frolicking through fields of daisies is applauded, and fairycore outfits are fully accepted. Here at Honey and Gingham, we understand EXACTLY how you feel. So we’ve put together 13+ of our favorite fairycore outfit ideas including dark fairycore dresses and accessories, the grunge look elements, and more.

First, Fairycore vs. Cottagecore…is there a difference?

Fairycore style is a branch off the popular modern fashion trend called cottagecore. Technically, it, along with cottagecore, began as an online aesthetic that went viral. The lifestyle, aesthetic, and even fashion choices defining the cottagecore label have been around for decades without definition or labels. Then in 2018, cottagecore acquired its kitschy name. And in 2020, when the pandemic forced us to isolate, somehow it also inspired many of us (unbeknownst to most of us at the time) to adapt and naturally incorporate the cottagecore way of living into our own. Baking bread, spending time in nature, dressing cute but also for comfort, working with herbs, and many other cottagecore activities became popular worldwide.

How is Fairycore different from Cottagecore?

I wouldn’t say fairycore is actually different from cottagecore. It truly sprang from and further defines the lifestyle and fashion. Fairycore just takes it a step further by adding more elements of nature, folklore, and fairy tales into the mix. It takes the dreaminess and fantasy to the next level. Something I love about the fairycore style (and cottagecore) is that you can truly make it your own. You don’t have to repeat what everyone else is doing. If you like more of a gothic look, you can go dark fairycore. If you’re more casual or into the grunge scene, go grunge fairycore. Your imagination is truly your limitation.

The Elements of a Fairycore Wardrobe

You don’t need all of these pieces in your wardrobe to call your style fairycore, but these are some true staples or the elements that can get you started:

  • A corset with laces
  • Flowy skirts and maxi dresses
  • Fabrics like lightweight cottons, gingham, lace, tulle, chiffon, and even silks and satins
  • Vintage dresses from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1970s (sometimes you’ll find the 80s and 90s repeated these vintage eras’ styles and these items work well for fairycore too)
  • Puffed sleeves
  • Peter pan collars
  • Button-up Victorian blouses
  • Off-the-shoulder, sexy corseted dresses
  • Floral fabrics with more understated or miniature floral patterns
  • Victorian lace-up boots
  • Gingham espadrilles and wedges
  • Straw hats
  • Floral crowns (DIY these for a cheap and easy craft!)
  • And a pair of FAIRY WINGS (Etsy has some great affordable options
  • Grunge options: t-shirts with fairies (especially Amy Brown or Brian Froud art), long cardigans and 90s jeans
  • Grunge fairycore: long sleeve shirts with thumb-holes, especially with fairy graphics

Now for the FUN…13+ Fairycore Outfit Ideas

Fairycore outfit ideas often start with a basic dress and build from there.
Look #1

1. Pastel Green and White Cotton Dress With Crown

When you’re shopping for fairycore outfits, consider lightweight cotton dresses in pastel colors and shades of white (like the outfit above). Then add simple accessories like a leather band bracelet and floral or vine crown. You can find lightweight cotton dresses like this one at Lilian’s Cottage on etsy and the crown you can either make yourself (watch the video below) or literally buy them anywhere online.

Fairycore is frequently known to use lace and chiffon in its aesthetic and style

2. Fairycore Outfit Idea – Dreamy Chiffon Dress and Straw Hat

I could see a beautiful elven woman wearing this sheer, chiffon dress with Victorian lace details. Obviously this isn’t an everyday type of fairycore outfit but one that works perfectly for photoshoots, cottagecore events, even your own engagement, wedding or baby shower. I found this Ingrid Chiffon Victorian Nightgown on Gloomth. It’s not as sheer but the details match and it is incredibly whimsical. Add a pair of faery antlers and take this fairycore look to the forest or ocean. Add a pair of feather heels and candlesticks and haunt the local castle. And amazon carries dozens of straw hat styles for women to complete the look.

3. Pink Floral Chiffon With Shimmer Wings and Split-dyed Hair

Fairycore outfit idea #3 is inspired by this whimsical lady of the sidhe pictured above. EXCEPT instead of going with a maxi or ballroom length gown like above, we’ll go a little more casual with our look. Instead of a chiffon maxi, try this Floral Halter Ruffle Mini Dress with espadrilles or wedges. A super cute look for Spring or Summer. And if you really want to add those fairy wings, check this pair out on Etsy. Ask your hairstylist about the split-dye hair look, if you’re ready to join Harley Quinn’s elven realm.

4. Fairycore Corseted Dress With Side Slit

Well, it’s not lavender-colored but it is a corseted mini dress and I think even cuter than the one pictured. I’m talking about this Floral Lace Up Corset Mini by Cider. Not to mention it’s only $36 AND choose the dress in black for a dark fairycore outfit. Truthfully, I bought both…one for when I’m in a Tinkerbell mood and another for when I’m feeling my inner Maleficent.

Guys and those who identify as male/masculine can also wear fairycore outfits.
5. Fairycore (Grunge Cottagecore) Outfit for a More Masculine Look

That’s right, my fairy princesses. I’m including a fairycore outfit idea for men or those who enjoy a more masculine look every once in a Blue Moon. The linen button-down shirt and slacks look ultra-comfortable and reminiscent of the Edwardian era. Choose the suspenders or leave the suspenders out. Either way, this is a hott vibe. I found this men’s white linen shirt on Macy’s. I’ll leave you up to the gray slacks but just know this – you can find vintage “grandpa” slacks at almost any thrift store on the cheap. And some FLORAL suspenders.

6. White Victorian Blouse and Bohemian Skirt

Yes, I said Bohemian skirt. The skirts in fairycore outfits don’t have to come from specific “cottagecore” boutiques. Any cotton, flowy, even comfortable Bohemian skirt like the one pictured works well for the fairycore style. I found this white maxi skirt at Walmart for $20! Which leaves us with more money to spend on the blouse. A simple google search for “white victorian blouse” turned up a wide range of tops for every price starting at $20 at Walmart all the way up to $130 at Anthropologie. And again…fairy floral crown? See the DIY video first section.

7. Dark Fairycore Outfit Idea: Corset and Tutu

We couldn’t shop for this style without including some dark fairycore outfits too. Here’s a simple yet gorgeous dark fairycore look – a gothic Victorian style corset (with laces) paired with a black tulle layered tutu. This outfit is so gorgeous, I’d wear it to my own gothic wedding, prom, photoshoot, Halloween party, and the list goes on. I found this women’s ainsley gothic corset to go with this black 3 layered tutu. Pair with Victorian lace-up boots.

8. Maleficent Meets Queen Ravenna Dark Fairycore Outfits

I was always the one who empathized with the misunderstood antagonists in the fairy tales. I’m not afraid to admit it now, especially since people seem to really be into the dark fairycore style like the one above. Fairycore outfit #8 pairs a leather zip-up corset (sort of rebellious for a true fairycore look) with a long black maxi skirt, pointed crown (do yourself a favor and go look at that crown on Etsy – WOW), and ornate jewelry.

More Dark Fairycore Outfit Ideas:

  • Clothing of darker colors: black, dark purple, burgundy, royal blue, emerald green, scarlet red
  • Stockings: fishnets, black lace, ripped
  • Dark fairy wings
  • Ballroom length tulle skirts
  • Black bodycon dresses (think Morticia Addams)
  • Dresses with bell sleeves (see below)
  • Black boots including witchy style and Doc Martens (Doc Martens are also considered more of a grunge fairycore shoe)

9. Dark Fairycore Ritual Dress in the Forest

The dark fairycore outfit above could truly double as a witchcore look to adorn your illustrious temple of a body for that forest ritual you’ve been planning. I can’t think of a more comfortable and Instagram-worthy dress than a long, black maxi with bell sleeves and a leather headband. I actually like her eye make-up here too. Heavy on the eyeshadow and red lips.

10. The Butterfly Goddess Fairy Look

Is there such thing as goddesscore? It should be a thing, particularly with this ethereal fairycore outfit idea. And isn’t the model absolutely stunning? If I didn’t know any better those butterflies thought she was one of their own. Recreate this fairycore goddess vibe with a deep purple dress like this Chic Dark Purple Dress from Lulu’s, gold bangle or wrap-around bracelets, and butterfly hairpins.

Fairycore outfit ideas could begin with a simple flowy pink knee length dress

11. The Understated Yet Perfect Pink Fairycore Outfit Ideas

In my closet, I like having a mixture of elegant and going-out outfits, business attire, and everyday outfits. For fairycore look #11, this pink flowy knee-length dress is a versatile piece. Wear it to an event, to a cocktail party, or on a date night. Honestly, you could get away with it as a day look when you’re out shopping, going to cafes, and brunching with the friends.

12. Alice in Wonderland Fairycore Outfit

All the best people are a little mad. And what fun would life be without dressing like we fell off the pages of Alice in Wonderland from time to time? This fairycore look is achievable with basically any frilly, a-line dress, vintage or retro-style chiffon apron, pink ribbons, and if you want to go all the way, dye your hair pink (or simply purchase a wig). Great cosplay idea or for an event or Halloween. Fairy tale style is a great way to be inspired for your own authentic fairycore outfit ideas.

13. Fantasy Grunge Fairycore Outfit Ideas

This is more of a fantasy grunge fairycore look. The earth tones give it that grungey yet natural feel but the pointy ears and fantasy details like the lion-headed belt buckle, horn at the waist, and grape brooch give it an otherworldly energy. I could truly see this “fairy” woman in the Lord of the Rings series. Mimic this look by opting for earth tones of tans, browns, and dark greens. A laced-up tan corset with brown skirt and large belt buckle pull it together. Don’t leave the elven ears at home.
